Olaf Juve Biography

Olaf was born and raised in northeast Oregon. He attended junior high and high school in the small town of Hermiston. During a ninth grade art class in 1970, he was drawn to an unused potter's wheel in the back of the classroom. His teacher had little experience in ceramics, however, he willingly supported Olaf's desire to learn about clay. Olaf possessed an innate ability to manipulate clay into various forms. Most of the art students followed his lead and began making pottery. Before long, Olaf was teaching adult education classes in ceramics.

Thirty five years later, Olaf continues to refinie his design and glazing skills. His studio is located in the pictureesque, Wallowa Valley in a barn built by his father years ago. Olaf's work is influenced by his strong sense of place and his family ties. Inspired by his natural surroundings, he creates complex designs that are truly original. Early on, he chose his middle name, "Olaf," as his trade name.

In addition to making functional stoneware, Olaf enjoys the challenge and mystery of working with raku. He is a master of reduction and is well known for the resulting bronze colors and crackled glazes. Each piece of Olaf's raku is an individual work of art.

Recently, Olaf has been collaborating with the founders of the LH Project. As a result of this union, Olaf is pursuing his dream of building kilns and firing ceramic art with wood. He is looking forward to assisting the LH Project as it grows and matures.
